I hope this is helpful.

It's hard to write a tutorial like this since some of my knowledge is purely observation based. By making this tutorial, I think i actually learn more about hands and how to avoid some of my own lazy habits/mistakes :lmao:

...that said, in no way am I perfect with drawing hands, and there's a chance I've made some mistakes. So while you may learn some techniques from this tutorial, always look to real life for accuracy and correction :)

Also in NO WAY is this tutorial a complete or exhausted study of hands. If I was prepping for a class or book it would be a different story, but It's not reasonable for me to spend that kind of time on a net tutorial :)

As some of you have pointed out: Not ALL hands will conform to generic proportions. Real hands, just like bodies, won't always have the same proportions, have variations, and quirks. I in fact have crooked fingers :dummy: but all the variations are kinda beyond the scope of this tutorial, but do know they are out there!

The Golden Ratio is based off the Fibonacci numbers. It's an fascinating thing, found through-out nature living and non-living. It's also linked to aesthetics (proof that math is beautiful).

All the hands above belong to me and many are from my own art pieces. So please do Not use them as Stock, as this is just for educational purposes.

This tutorial took a LOT of time. So please be respectful and let me know if you want to use it for something :) Chances are I'm totally cool with it! If there is something I didn't cover and you really want to know more about it... you can inquire about it.

Suggester's words: Hands Tutorial by *JohnYume is well thought out and very detailed in describing the process of drawing hands. It breaks down the hand into simple shapes that are understandable and make the hand less of a challenge to draw. It covers many aspects of drawing hands and features many of the options that you can choose to do with the hand once you have drawn the initial form. It is an extremely great resource to have in reach because hands are one of the hardest things of the human anatomy to draw. It is great piece and it definitely deserves to be featured for the whole deviantArt community to see. ( Suggested by =A-Morphine-Toast and Featured by `FantasyStock )

Oh, where do you find your photo references?

I actually make nearly all of my photo references (included the ones shown above) because I'll want very specific poses for my art :)

But if you don't want to use yourself as the model or you want to "see" other hand types, you can search for "stock" & "hands" on DA. Or look up "hands" on: www.sxc.hu
Just be sure to give credit to your sources if you do :D
