Line Art Tutorial by JohnYume Line Art Tutorial by JohnYume
For Photoshop, but you should be able to utilize some of the methods in other art programs (like Gimp).

Line art Tutorial, preparing the art before coloring.

Briefly covers: Scanning, rotating, layers, cleaning
Covers: Levels, Dodge and Burn, drawing in photoshop

I didn't make this fool-proof so if you have questions please ask.

This is just the method I use to prepare my lineart. There's no wrong or right way, this is just the style I've developed. I've been using this method for awhile... it may seem complicated but it makes my work go VERY fast. That's why I use it XD

(yeah I had to do this first ~_~ the color tutorial is coming up next)

That trick with the dodge and burn tool is incredibly useful (and the rest of the tutorial too ofcourse :dummy:), I'll certainly use that in the future! :D Thanks so much for sharing!

My sketches never turn out nice. I think I have too many problems for now.
Can't find any options on my scanner, need better paper, need to sketch nicer... etc. xD but I'll keep this for later.

I LOVE YOU.

Sorry. I never really have time to redo line art so I've been doing mine in sharpie so it would show up (hence ugly lines on this [link]).

I've always loved the way pen/pencil looks on paper. Thank you for posting this.

Yeah most scanners tend to wash-out drawings. Levels is on of those helpful things I learned through college courses haha.

awesome tutorial! I have Photoshop elements as well and I really hate it when there are steps in tutorials that my program doesn't have. Although I'm not a huge fan of the dodge and burn tools. I tend to use an overlay layer for stuff like this. That way I can adjust exactly how much darker it gets by changing the opacity of the overlay layer. This tutorial was really helpful and I'm happy that it wasn't overly complicated like most tutorials out there. THANK YOU!

I have a more advance photoshop now, but I still like to keep tutorials as accessible as possible. I know not everyone has the same programs!

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the dodge and burn tools either. I rarely use them and when I do use them, I only use them tiny bit for minor adjustments.

Interesting method with the overlay o3o So you copy the lineart into a new layer and use the overlay blending option? I haven't tried that before.

And you're welcome! I'm glad this tutorial was useful for you :D

Yeah I create a new overlay layer and use either white or black and then adjust the opacity of it to fine tune it. I just have to make sure it's within a selection first if I want to merge them or else the layers underneath will show the extra black or white.

Thank you for writing this! I always avoided scanning works (usually I'd photograph them) because my scanner messed them up so much. This should be really helpful! I need to put it up whenever I scan something. Thank you!

Traditional linearts... are now... POSSIBLE.

LOVELYLOVELYLOVELY.

I hope everyone has shown you as much appreciation as I feel for this tutorial. From someone new to line art, new to deviations, new-ish to photoshop, this very basic kind of broken down tutorial is WONDERFUL.

I'm linking people back to your tutorial at some point because it was my savior =]

how do you use this for gimp?

I'm not super familiar with gimp, but I know the most recent gimp at least has layers and levels. It's not 100% the same but you can use the same concept to work in gimp.

The gray bar on the top has most everything you need, "colors", "layer", "windows". The levels are found in "colors" on the menu bar. You can view your layers by clicking "windows" and then clicking "layers". And you can add new layers by clicking "layer" on the menu bar, then "new layer".

Photoshop Elements is pretty cheap if you can get a copy. It often comes free with wacom tablets :D

Tablets!?!!!! O.O!! REALLY!?! I need to get that then! >.< I have been wanting one for a REALLY long time but 1) I didn't know where to get them and 2) I thought they were really expensive D:

Amazon I find is really good place for tablets lol

[link]

A friend of mine just got this one and likes it. It comes with Photoshop elements 5, a wacom tablet, and is about $55 with shipping. If you're straped for cash this is a really good buy.

If you can afford more, wacom tablets run for $100+ Many people like the "Bamboo" series. I personally have a Graphire 4 and like that.

THIS IS *SO* USEFUL! And it's about time you made a tutorial. :) The explanation's very clear, but there's a lot of distractions along the way. Like... if you didn't have this crazy talent of creating extremely hot guys in your artwork, I would have taken only 5 minutes just reading through.

I took 15 instead. xD

Thank you so much for doing a tutorial, bunny-dear!! *hugs*

Oh... *coughs* Is the bishie up for adoption? OwO

But oi, I'm glad the explanation is clear >w<

LOL I wish he was ;w; I'd want him for my own
